A Classic Cape

The owners need more space for a home office and a kids bedroom. The decision was made to add a Nantucket Dormer.

While the roof is still on, preparations are made, such as the reenforcement of the second floor and enlarging the stairway to meet code requirements. In addition to adding the dormer, the owner also would like to make a few renovations to the first floor. As you can see in the far right photo a wall was removed to open up the living room stairs with an open baluster system.
The roof is now removed. Two full days are needed to make the roof weather tight. Lets hope blue skies are in the forecast.
A Nantucket Dormer has two gables and a shed. Notice how the dormer sits in front of the eaves to give the home more detail. The Skies are still blue!
The walls are braced to make plumb and the rafters are put into place. Blue skies again.
The trim, windows and roof shingles are installed making the roof weather tight. The new space is then created with intricate ceiling lines.
You will notice that during construction, the deck below is always protected. Marvin true divided lite windows are put into place, giving the home an authentic look. The bleached sidewall shingles are installed.
To complete the framing process, the two front dormers are installed.
Inside, the foam insulation is applied to give an R-30 factor which meets EnergyStar certification requirements. Metal studs are then put into place in order to minimze clearances and maximize safety.
The exterior is now complete. Now the wall boards will be hung and the walls will be plastered. Once completed the baseboard, trim, tile and wood floors will be installed. Then it is time to add a little color and install plumbing and electrical fixtures. Now that the project is complete, lets take a peek and see how it came out.
Lets start with the bathrooms, check out the new built in storage and medicine cabinets. How convenient.
